Masters Sunday: Rory's Road to Redemption

Recorded April 13th, 2025

Redemption tastes sweet in a green jacket. After 13 years of heartbreak at Augusta National, Rory McIlroy finally captured the elusive Masters title in dramatic fashion, defeating Justin Rose in a playoff to complete the career Grand Slam.

The final round was pure theater. McIlroy and DeChambeau struggled early, with Rory making double on the first hole and Bryson snap-hooking his tee shot into the trees. As the day unfolded, the leaderboard transformed into a revolving door of contenders. At one point, McIlroy built a four-shot lead—eerily reminiscent of his 2011 collapse—before hitting his approach shot into the water on 13. Meanwhile, Justin Rose made an astonishing ten birdies, Zach Johnson turned back the clock at 49 years old, and Ludvig Åberg remained in contention until a disastrous triple bogey on 17.

The most poignant moment came after the victory when McIlroy revealed that Angel Cabrera—his playing partner during that infamous 2011 meltdown—had left him a note in his locker before the final round. Full circle doesn't begin to describe it. With a gleam in his eye at the press conference, Rory posed a question to the assembled media: "What are all y'all going to talk about next year? What are you going to ask me?"

With this victory, McIlroy joins Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods in golf's most exclusive club. The question now becomes not if he belongs among the greats, but how high he might climb on that illustrious list. Subscribe now to hear our complete breakdown of one of the most memorable Masters in recent history.

Announcer:

Welcome to another episode of the Bald Guys on the Bench podcast, with your hosts Graham Cohen and Scott Wasco.

Graham:

Hello friends, welcome to another edition of the Bald Guys on the Bench. What a week for the Masters. What a day, scott, how was your Sunday? Tell me all about it, brother.

Scott:

Hello friends, my name is Scott Wasco. My hero is Jim Nance, and at the end of the Masters tournament he proved once again why he's the best in the business. As Rory makes the birdie putt on the first playoff hole to become the sixth player to win the career Grand Slam, jim Nance did not say a word and it happened. We got to see the emotion from Rory Finally putting on the green jacket. Oh my gosh, I'm so pissed. You had to work today and miss the action. Oh my gosh, but you know, before we even get into it, this show could go on and on. The action, oh my gosh. But you know, before we even get into it, this show could go on and on and on. You know how many notes we have going into this show Not me. So, folks, I'm sorry if we jump all around. It was a Sunday at Augusta that I'll never forget, from ups downs, all the rounds, your boy rooting for Patrick Reed. Yeah, I said it.

Graham:

Grab it, crack it, let's go, I mean wow, can that just be a slap yourself moment?

Scott:

Dude the funny thing is, you know, and the reason I'm pulling for patrick reed is because of this pool. I'm in with a 90 people and he was in my, on my team, and I text tp and I'm like, oh my god, patrick reed is the mvp of my team this week and he goes. Wow, and this was word for word from TP. You're treading the fine line of integrity there. Pretty soon you might be wanting Rogers to replace Herbert, or even Evander Kane on the Knights. And as soon as he got that text out, patrick Reed three putted from like a foot and a half on the 15th hole and I'm like, till he missed that putt and that one.

Scott:

Anyhow, the deuce, deuce, my boy made on the 17th hole. Put your boy tied for second in the pool, me Maros and my old assistant Ryan tied for second in the pool, me miros and my old assistant ryan tied for second. Let's go. Fun masters week, fun sunday. But before we even dive any deeper, graham, how was your weekend? I know you worked and I know you were bitter, betty, you didn't get to watch a little bit of this? I mean, how was it you?

Graham:

know, you know, I mean it was good. I had a Friday off, spent with the family, went out to some lunch and then after that just did some stuff on the computer and then later that evening um, I hashtag ws what catched up on some shows, watched uh, 19, yeah, 1923 on paramount plus. Which have you? Have you been watching that? I?

Announcer:

haven't. Did you watch 18?

Graham:

okay, anyway, phenomenal, but uh yeah, just kind of low-key. Um, you know, work's been good but it's just, you know, because I had thursday off, I was able to watch a lot of a lot of the masters on thursday, so I was glad I was able to watch that. Um, I watched a decent amount of it on friday. But I mean, everyone knows the two best days are saturday and sunday moving day and then sunday and it's just. You know all the action that happened on Sunday. You know a lot of it.

Graham:

I had to catch watching the replay, um, or at least even the highlights. But, folks, I can honestly say I don't think I've ever done this. But I'm gonna re-watch the broadcast after this is over and and re-watch the entire match because, like I missed it, you know what I mean. Like it's it's that compelling like I could tell just from like, because we I missed it. You know what I mean. Like it's it's that compelling like I could tell just from like, because we were playing it at work, obviously, and we had the volume coming through the speakers, so it's like I'm hearing something dude.

Graham:

I mean all the p, all the patrons that were um and, but the patrons of where I work, not at the, you know, not, of course. Um, you know they're all cheering for all the stuff that's going on. So it's just like I don't have a feel of what's really going on. I just am hearing all these cheers and claps and like, oh, so I'm really looking forward to, either later tonight or tomorrow, going online or the Golf Channel or wherever I need to, and just hit and play and say, hey, hey, start me from position one, from rory, and uh, let's see what happens. So I was speechless. The worst part is I'm seeing your text to me and you're like, are you seeing this shit? And I'm like no, so then you have the crying emoji. I was like I wish it was insane.

Scott:

I mean, I was down in Wilmington. You know we're college hunting now. It was an awesome weekend, uh, with family, and sad, obviously for my uncle, but uh, you know, it was a celebration of life and just to see the people at his memorial that he touched their lives was insane, Absolutely insane. But Kellen and I are getting ready to leave this morning we're having breakfast at the hotel and I randomly pull up on my MapQuest. I'm like we're almost in South Carolina, in Wilmington, and I'm like, how long is it to Augusta from here? And I'm like, dude, I'm halfway there, it's four hours. And I'm like, dude, I'm halfway there, it's four hours. And I'm like, hey, kellen, you want to sit in the car and watch YouTube for six hours while your dad goes in and, you know, watch the final round. Jokingly, obviously, if I thought about this last night, I would have made a couple texts. Yeah, maybe gotten a ticket from somebody that finished, I think, in the top 10, yeah, but uh, anyhow, drove home early this morning, literally pulled in the driveway, 225, missed the opening t-shot. Didn't get to watch a lot of golf yesterday, but what I did see was Bryson's finish. We made the bomb on 18 to put himself in the last group with Rory. We're not even going to get into the first three rounds because if we did, we could sit here and talk about it until tomorrow.

Scott:

What we will say about the first round is Rory's start. Homeboy had the pep in his step, shoots four under on the front, you know. He starts the back nine or I don't know, maybe it wasn't four under, but he started the back nine, 3-3-3. Yeah, okay. And hits a laser beam on 15. Was it 15? Yeah, on 15. And then chips it in the water, makes dub Okay and then dub 17 and finishes the day. Even par and all the golf fans out there know how Rory walks when everything's going his way. He's got that little pep in his step. He's got the little leprechaun bump bopping the head.

Scott:

Don't eat my lucky choms. He's rolling, shoots him in the car. It's like oh dude, does this guy really have to do this shit again? Whatever Follows it up, next day solid round and Justin Rose amazing veteran, you know won the U S open and now, with his loss in the playoff to Rory okay At the masters Justin Rose becomes the second person to lose at Augusta in a playoff other than Ben Hogan.

Graham:

Is this after having a lead or just in general?

Scott:

No, he's the second player to lose twice in a playoff at Augusta.

Announcer:

Oh, okay, I got you Wow.

Scott:

Him and Ben Hogan are the only ones. Wow. And my boy, rosie, made 10 birdies today. Is that any good? 10. Okay, shoots 75. Yesterday he had to lead through 36 holes. Shoots three over yesterday. Thumbs out today.

Graham:

I know I, just I'm looking at the scorecard right now. I'm like what?

Announcer:

Yeah dude.

Scott:

But the way the day started, dude, it's what everybody wanted, right? You know, bryson beat Rory at Pioneers last year. They weren't in the same group, bryson was a group ahead of them, but we got it, dude. We got what we wanted. I had friends, I had students that I teach. They're like who are you pulling for today? And I'm like I don't care, what we have today is good for golf.

Scott:

Yeah, we've got the face. I mean, you've got two of the three faces of the sport in the last group at augusta and the number one player in the world, scotty. A couple groups in front of them that if my guy could have made a goddamn putt, they might still be playing a playoff right. But dude, but dude, rory has to fight the demons. And you know, when we were driving into the neighborhood we got to listen to Tariqo calling their tee shots on the first hole and Tariqo says you know, let's see after the starter announces each player, which way the fans are. Know sighting. Yeah, you couldn't tell. Yeah, you know, rory, rory hits it, hits it in the bunker on one. I'm telling kellen I'm like, oh boy, here we go. I'm like bryson's about to hit a seed. Bryson snaps, snap hooks it into the trees left.

Graham:

Oh, bro, that's the only thing I did see.

Scott:

And I'm like, oh man, then Rory makes dub, bryson makes par. We're even after the first hole and you know what Everybody starts doing. We've talked about it. We talked about it in great length Last week. You know How's Rory gonna handle it. We've talked about it. We talked about it in great length last week. You know I was worried going to handle it. Then second hole Rory hits it in the fairway bunker, easily reachable par five, especially when you're hitting your driver. Three, 70. I'm sorry what Like like dude the distance him and Bryson were hitting their drivers. You've been there like Rory hit a pitching wedge into number 11 yeah, that's insane, insane number 9, the downhill dogleg left.

Graham:

He hit it over the downslope when you got a baby wedge in and you're like wait, what dude? Anyhow I need to hit my driver and an eight iron to get it to where rory hit it dude.

Scott:

But I'm just gonna say, you know, bryson makes birdie on two, rory makes par after two holes, boom, bryson's got a one-shot lead. And oh man, here comes the tweets, here comes the holy shit. It's beginning. I texted you the same thing after the first hole. Yeah, and it begins, or something like that Yep, dude. And then luck happens. Amazing shots happen, disgusting shots happen. I couldn't even believe what I was watching.

Scott:

Bryson had absolutely zero feel with his irons all day because he was in spots and just couldn't get it done. But the craziest thing you know, I saw it this morning and I was like dumbfounded and I'm literally going to like read you word for word from this Instagram post Okay, literally going to like. Read you word for word from this Instagram post Okay, imagine chilling with your pals and Augusta on Saturday of the masters, and then the U S open champ turns up to do some putting practice with you ahead of an Epic final round battle. What a legend. Folk notes reports on the broadcast that Bryson went for a walk around where his rental house is last night and found some guys putting in their backyard having beers. He spent an hour with them.

Graham:

Trying to not cuss very much, but are you flipping, kidding me right now? Like Dude, you can't knock the guy. Like I don't care what anyone says. Like this dude, I mean I don't want to say he's like he's carrying the shield, like I don't care, it's him and rory. That's what we all wanted and you know, I look we already mentioned that I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked.

Graham:

But the thing is, is the expectation uh well, I won't say expectation, but how I thought before the final round started, what I thought was going to happen kind of didn't really go how I thought it was going to go. Like I really thought the both of them were going to be pushing each other. Yeah, I don't want to say like in a good way, but you know the battle that they're going to be pushing each other. Um, yeah, I don't say like in a good way, but you know the battle that they're gonna have exactly off each other. And and the thing is, for me personally, it's just the consistency in which bryson has been playing, especially in this past year, year and a half, but just how well he's been playing, even the first three days. Yeah, he had to battle a little bit on Saturday, you know Thursday. Friday it wasn't as bad. But to your point, some of the highlights that I saw from Bryson today I'm just like dude. I saw his tee shot on one. I'm like what.

Scott:

Dude Bryson.

Graham:

What was that?

Scott:

Bryson for the first three rounds was literally vintage. Seve my guy's short game when he got up and down on number 10, I think it was. Was it the first round? It might've been the first round From long and left over the green out of pine straw and he hits this little nipper up there yeah, you're like what, what, all right bro, but you know, like you said, though, it didn't go how we thought it was going to go.

Scott:

You know, like we thought we thought it was going to be a battle. You know, I mean going into today. Rory had a two shot lead. I'm sitting there, yeah, telling my dad I'm like Rory goes out and shoot 69. It's going to be tough for Bryson Right To win. Yeah, he's going to have to shoot 66, 67 in the playoffs, but then he goes out. Rory goes out and shoots 73. And Bryson shoots 75.

Graham:

Now let me ask you a question, as you're contemplating this if I would have told you before this round started, like literally before this round started, like literally before this round started, if Rory shoots 73, what do you think Bryson's chances are to win 100? He gone 100. That's, that's my point.

Scott:

Do not pass, go, don't collect 100 bucks, just drop everything right, I didn't see 75 out of him today.

Graham:

I'm more surprised than anything. And look, I know it's augusta. Yeah, anything can happen. The bounces, you know, the lies, everything. I mean you could have the unluckiest bounces or the most unfortunate bounces, like what you were showing me with rory earlier off. What 11?

Graham:

where you thought it was, yeah, where you thought it was behind the tree, but it wasn't that was five, yeah yeah, I'm fine, like so, but I mean it is what it is, but like wow, I mean just the fluctuation of how the leaderboard went through the middle part of the day and just guys that you're just like, where did you come from, like, where did you come from Shoffley? Where did you come from Zach Johnson?

Scott:

What, dude? Zach Johnson at 49 years old? Are you kidding me? He ate, I know, right. I mean he starts off. He starts, he barely makes the cut on the number and then goes out and shoot 66, 71 on the weekend and Eagle's number two today. I mean that ain't bad. I mean, can we talk about Max Homa?

Graham:

Yeah, I guess he's figuring out those irons, huh.

Scott:

My guy hadn't made a cut dude since the Open Championship last July. That's insane. And goes out, opens the tournament with a 74, two over, then shoots two under the second round, then goes 69-71 on the weekend T12, guess where he's playing next year? Augusta dude, bubba Watson, didn't he get booted off the live tour for his shitty play? Yeah, he's a two time winner of Augusta.

Graham:

I mean one of my favorite Masters. When's the last time you?

Scott:

heard his name in golf. Yeah, besides talking about the greatest hook gap wedge of all times on number 10 in the playoff.

Graham:

Yeah, right, I mean, I think also what was surprising. Which A? I called it last week on the episode. I thought for sure it was going to happen, but that son of a, b had to make that putt on the last hole for day two. John Rahm, dude, dude, I thought John Rahm was missing. The cut, dude, it was right in the weight making for me. I'm like, ooh, baby.

Scott:

Dude. He made a six-footer on 18 to make the cut and then t14. Yeah, I'm like what? What dude? Uh, in my pool I'm sweating speath to make the cut. He makes the cut on the number two over and then goes out 69-70, t14. Yeah, and the story of all stories you know Bernhard, playing in his last Masters, misses the cut-up by one Dude. He's inside the cut line with three holes left. Yeah, same with Freddie. Freddie missed by two. He was inside the cut line. But I heard something on PGA tour radio today. You know the honorary starters. They're probably our next wave, right, bernhard freddy? Oh, yeah, without a doubt, they have to be.

Graham:

Yeah, I have to yeah, I mean because, like I was just thinking about it, this is the 89th Masters, next year is the 90th. The 100th running of the Masters is going to be 2036. Who's going to be the starters? You know what I mean? It's crazy to think that it's going to be 100 years already soon enough.

Scott:

Speaking of, though we mentioned it earlier, rory, sixth player ever to win the career at Grand Slam Gene Sheridan, ben Hogan, gary Player, jack Nicklaus, tiger, now Rory what comes to your mind when I say that?

Graham:

As I think about it. I'm glad today happened for Rory he can get the monkey office back, but the thing it's just like I almost feel like people kind of it expected it to happen and the fact that it just it's like almost a running joke that he hasn't been able to get the career glance slam. I guess what I'm trying to say is, when you're ranking players all time, you know, making that list of the career glance slam, I mean that hoists you way up there and the thing is would we have thought any different?

Graham:

Like does him winning this major now does? Does that make us change our opinion of him?

Scott:

No, I mean like— we talked about it last week.

Graham:

Yeah, and that's my point. It's just like he's—besides Tiger Woods, who's been the most dominant player on the tour in the last 15 years. Well, you know—.

Scott:

Consistently, consistently. If Phil would have hit a damn three word off, the 72nd hole in the U S open yeah.

Announcer:

He would have had a career grand slam.

Graham:

Yeah, wing, foot that's too many crickets.

Scott:

And what happened? Do you don't, without looking, show me your hands. This is going to be the best part of when we actually go live on YouTube. Is everybody's going to hold you accountable? Who?

Graham:

won. I don't cheat.

Scott:

Who won that?

Graham:

Oh fuck, oh shit.

Scott:

Oh, you know it went to a playoff. I don't know why Schwartzel's coming to mind. No, he was Augusta.

Graham:

No, it's the same kind of guy though Same.

Scott:

No, he was Augusta. It's the same kind of guy, though they look alike. If Paul Montgomery makes par on the last hole, Monty wins his first major.

Graham:

Yeah, I knew that it was. It just hit me with it. You know the golf course I know I was there, not at the event, but I was. I was right before. What year was that 2000?

Scott:

I was in French Valley, I know that, so that was before 2011.

Graham:

No, so that's what I'm saying. Like I was at the golf course no, not the golf course. Yeah, I was at the when I was working, I was caddying in New York. So I'm saying I was at the golf course no, not the golf course. Yeah, I was at the golf course when I was working, I was caddying in New York.

Scott:

So I'm like oh, it was 2006. Oh, so therefore then, Yep Not Ratif. Nope, oh my God. And Phil hits the shot and he's like I'm an idiot.

Graham:

Oh man, the initials or something I don't know, just hit me with it.

Scott:

Jeff Ogilvie, I'm gonna be so pissed oh does he not look just like Charles Wurzel?

Graham:

wait, yeah, did Ogilvie win a Masters too? No, okay, so he only had the one major yeah no, because I remember him.

Scott:

I think he won a match play or something like that yeah, he.

Graham:

I mean, I don't want to call Ogilvy a flash in the pan. He had a good few years, but other than that he was like Jeff. Oh, dude, as soon as you said that I was like, yeah, you could have said J-O and I would have been like who, jeff Ogilvy? Yeah, especially with that hairline that looked like ours. Yeah, yeah.

Scott:

Especially with that hairline that looked like ours. Yeah, but anyhow, I today was insane, dude. It was a roller coaster of emotions, you know, not only because of the pool I was in, but just you know you're up down the whole. Rory's got a. He's making the turn, bro. Four shot lead. Same exact thing where he blew it. He snap, hooked it off the house and ends up shooting 80. Okay, and yeah, he goes out. I'm pretty sure that he birdied. Yeah, he birdied 10. Talk about slaying demons. Last time you had a four-shot lead. You, you made seven. Today you make birdie right and bt's like game over. I was hoping the back nine was gonna be fun and exciting, not anymore. I'm like simmer down there, bt. I'm like do you remember shaw? Remember softly the year Adeke won it when he hit it over the green on 15 and went in the water? What?

Graham:

Dude. He came out of nowhere this week, kind of he was making some putts. He had some good shots. I'm looking at the scoreboard today. Harris English started plus one and finished minus four. What?

Scott:

Yeah, no, he started, even If you shoot four under on your last round and you finish the tournament four under. Then you're probably going to be four under. Oh well, it said one to one. Can I get two slaps and a Ric Flair?

Graham:

No, I'm looking at these. Oh it's not my fault, come on. Tp this one's for you. It says one, so he's plus one. Open your eyes. It says one and then a red four. Isn't that plus one to minus four? No, am I wrong? No, am I reading this incorrectly?

Scott:

Yeah, you're 100% reading it incorrectly. So can we get two slaps and a Ric Flair? All right, woo.

Announcer:

Thank you, Graham.

Scott:

I can't wait till I earn my first two slaps and a Ric Flair.

Graham:

I'm like, ooh, matsuyama had a day today, dude.

Scott:

I mean, how about this? And this just takes the cake. Okay, yeah, something we've been talking about and I don't know. It's pretty amazing. Rory, we all know, had a four-shot lead. Right that one year Snap hooks it off the house. Okay, right, a four-shot lead, right that one year snap hooks it off the house. Okay, right, when rory opens up his press conference after he wins the green jacket, he literally says, quote for quote I'd like to start the press conference with a question myself what are all y'all going to talk about next year? What are you going to ask me?

Announcer:

Oh you know, what bro?

Scott:

And then this will give you goosebumps. Okay, you ready Because I just got it. I just got them thinking about reading this to you. He then also said Angel Cabrera left him a note in his locker this morning and that was his playing partner in the final round in 2011. Wow, insane, wow Insane. Not only that, dude, he's in the playoff against one of his best friends, ryder Cup teammates, and they're battling. Dude, the putt Rose made on the 72nd hole. I was getting ready to say it and you took the words right out of my mouth. Whose putt was that?

Graham:

Marco Mira 1998. Or 1997, sorry oh dude.

Scott:

Two slaps in a Ric Flair 97. How can you forget 98, bro? Two slaps in a Ric Flair Tiger won in 97, when he won by 37.

Graham:

Come on.

Scott:

I said 98 first, Then you were like no 97, Two slaps.

Graham:

No, I was like 98, let's go, come on, love it. No 97.

Scott:

Two slaps no, I was like 98. 90. Let's go.

Announcer:

Come on, woo, love it, love it Good for you too.

Graham:

I'm sorry, you don't know Speaking of a player that needs to two-slap in Ric Flair himself. Bro Shane Lowry Ooh.

Scott:

What Like we were talking before we came on. You didn't see the interview yesterday and I just caught the highlight of it. Lowry finishes bogey-bogey yesterday, walks off the course. First question they ask him is about Rory, and everybody knows Shane and Rory are like best friends, so he's like I'm not here to answer questions about Rory. I just finished bogey bogey. I'm pissed. He's in the middle of the tournament. He goes I'm going to walk off before I say something stupid. He's like I've probably already said something stupid and then goes to the to the range to hit balls.

Scott:

Shane, lowry, you might want to calm down before you tee it up on Sunday at Augusta, because that 81 and dude golf is hard. I know I'm not all these people in our San Diego league that are going oh, rory's choking again. Dude, go play golf. Okay, the putt in the playoff. I'm sitting here watching it with Kellen. It's a foot and a half and Kellen I'm like he may or may not make this and Kellen's like I could make that and I'm like you know what you probably could, because you don't know the importance of it. You know what I mean.

Graham:

Yeah, if you ain't feeling the pressure, it ain't no thing but a chicken wing.

Scott:

On a string from Burger King. Dude, it was amazing, dude, it was such a wild. Back nine. I mean Rory hits a seed off the 13th hole. I mean going going into 12, you're like this is his last big, you know shot. He has to get right. He can not right, he can not pull Molinari a Jordan Spieth on 12 with the lead. You gotta hit green. At worst, make four, you know, make bogey, makes par. Bryson makes bogey. Rory hits a seed on 13. Dude, bryson hits driver on 13,. And I'm going, he's just done. He can't hit driver on 13. It's not long enough. Bryson just rips it over everything. Thanks for playing. I think he had like pitching wedge or something in. Whatever Rory decides to lay up at a perfect angle, perfect everything. So I'm sitting in the water.

Graham:

What? And on a side note, bryson's pitching wedge is like 195, by the way, dude.

Scott:

But chunks it in the water. As he's chunking it in the water rows a couple groups ahead and this is weird. We all know where the traditional Sunday pin on 16, the par 3 is right Back left. They didn't have it there. No, they had it back right.

Scott:

That's normally where they put it on Friday you know why they put it back right, and I don't give a shit what anybody says. I'll argue this forever. Okay, and we talked about it last week. What does rory hit a draw? What does bryson hit a draw? What's the hardest side of the green to attack a pin? At the right side? The right side, graham. I think it was the first time jerry sent me a text about the pin placement. I think it was the first time it was there on a Sunday since Nicholas won way back when. I'm going to tell you exactly 1975. Sunday's hole location on 16 matches, that of the final round on 75, to honor the 50th anniversary of Jack Nicholas winning his fifth green jacket. Whatever they put it over there, that wasn't even a spot, bro, until those two players.

Graham:

I didn't even realize that, because normally that's a. Is that a Friday or a Saturday? I think it's a Friday. I've seen both.

Scott:

The hardest pin on that green is front right on that little plateau. Dude, I remember sitting there all day. Was it Friday? Maybe Friday, yeah, it might have been Saturday, I don't know. And two or three birdies, that's it.

Announcer:

Yeah, but.

Scott:

Justin knows, just as soon as Rory chunks his wedge in the water, rose hits it tight and we're like, oh shit, oh yeah, but dude, I I don't even know.

Graham:

I mean, like I said, there weren't a lot of notes and we're going off real emotion hey, speaking of real emotion, something that, uh, you know, I don't want to call it low-hanging fruit, but there was some news that came out was it day one or day two from the amateur about the uh, the kid from when he'd go to aaron's in state, the kid that uh, kid that won the us amateur and playing with scotty.

Scott:

And uh, I think jt no, the kid that, yeah, the kid that won the US Amateur.

Graham:

And playing with Scotty and I think JT no, the kid that pissed in race three yeah. I know he was playing with.

Scott:

Scotty, the first two rounds. Dude Bro, dude TP. We were talking about it. You can't like. Is my guy ever going to be invited back?

Graham:

No chance He'd have to qualify yeah.

Scott:

He's got to qualify for it. But, dude, I remember Fowler's first time playing at Augusta. He's sitting in the press conference room and he's got his hat backwards and they asked him to turn his hat around. Yeah, now you got homeboy in and race creek I'm just gonna go out, I'm just gonna go out real quick. I don't even remember his name, but homeboy from arizona state you owe the world who slaps in a rick flair, so I'm just gonna go out and do it for you.

Graham:

You're an idiot the craziest part is like he's getting interviewed after it and because everyone's like bro, are you for real? You know he's like. He's like bro, it's like I really had to go and I couldn't find anywhere. He's like I didn't think it would be that big of a deal. And then they said to him and they said, well, if the situation happened again, would you still do it? And he's like yeah, yeah, bro, the first time. All right, if you didn't know, you might be they'll reprimand you, but you could probably get away with it. The response of saying you'll do it again.

Scott:

Bye-bye, dude you just, you just got to stay in the crow's nest. You know where all the amateurs that play in the masters stay, yeah, even though they only stay for like one or two nights because it's like super small. But whatever, you just stayed in the crow's nest and now you're whipping out the old lizard pissing in Rays Creek. I mean, we always say it on this show, but make it make sense just I can't like.

Graham:

Could you imagine the best part is like when he's being interviewed zero fucks Dude Given Zero Dude what.

Scott:

How. This is the thing that sucks. Okay, we're at Augusta and cell phones aren't allowed. You know, if cell phones are there, we just see in the stream.

Announcer:

Oh.

Graham:

Hey, maybe we'll get leaked on, maybe some official or someone I don't know, security guard, something, I don't know. It's just I can't even comprehend what he was thinking. I mean, look, we know what he was thinking. I gotta pee, I need to go now, let's find the you know closest place and hide in the bushes. But even still, I just I mean, as they say's always one and he is that one man. That's crazy.

Graham:

You know the craziness of round four today. You know there was fireworks everywhere. There was people jumping up, jumping down. I mean, look, when we started the last episode. No, I should say when we started, look, when we started the last episode. No, I should say when we started, when we talked about what we were looking forward to with this Masters on our last episode, we said all we want is good play. We want it to be. You know, we want it to have excitement, we wanted it to come down to the weekend, but we wanted Sunday to be action. You know we didn't want it to have a go-away winner. You know, obviously we were rooting for bryson, we were rooting for rory to get the career grand slam. But you know, it's when golf is exciting, when golf's at it best, especially at the masters. It's when you have five, six, seven guys that all are within two strokes and they got a chance Because that back nine absolutely and I'll say it again absolutely anything can happen, anything, dude.

Scott:

Patrick Reed, you know, finished his solo third. Like I said earlier, he three-putted on 15 from a foot and a half to make bogey. Yeah, okay, scheffler, ludwig, I mean after ludwig, before ludwig hit his t-shot, number four, the long-ass par three, and all this shit's happening behind him. Billy texts me like F it. I just took Ludwig plus 850 live and I'm like, okay, ludwig sticks it on number four, 230-yard par three, so like 10 feet and I instantly go Ludwig live plus 700. Right, dude, corey Connors was right there At one point. I mean I bet Corey Connors live. He's two shots out of the lead. He's plus 3,000.

Announcer:

Yeah right.

Graham:

I just it was right there. I know it was I. I know it was, I don't know I mean the worst part is I'm looking at Ludvig's score right now. He was at 10 under on 16. Yeah, and then went bogey triple, yeah. Like I don't know what to say after that.

Scott:

I mean, and he shoots two under on the front, Birdie's 10. You know he's at three under.

Graham:

And you're like I mean, you saw he hit in the bunker on 18. He catches the lip. I was surprised he caught the lip. The fairway bunker, so he catches the lip. Yeah, in the fairway bunker on the left, so he catches the lip. The fairway, so he catches the lip. Yeah, I'm the fairway bunker on the left, so he catches the lip. Has to re, has to re-hit goes to the right side, green bunker, yeah. And I'm like, uh, but that's not a difficult, it's not that difficult to chip and I'm floating right now you know, but still yeah, but like.

Graham:

But then he chips it over the green again and I'm like bro, especially because I have him in my pool, my master's pool that I'm in I'm like it's almost like he knew he was out of it. He's like all right, I'm just trying to finish, but here's and I'm just like.

Scott:

Here's a, a dude that's played in two Masters tournaments, this being his second. Last year finishes second, this year finishes seventh, I mean played two times, both times to make the top ten.

Graham:

It's not bad.

Scott:

Not bad. It was insane. It was just a wild day and my phone was going nuts. You know, couldn't believe it. Nobody knew what was gonna happen. You know, I mean rory what's going to happen. You know, I mean Rory stuffs it on 15. He's got like 9, 10 feet for Eagle Doesn't make it. But then he's got like a wedge in his hands on 18. Barr wins it and he hits it in the bunker and misses a short par putt. I mean, hey, the shot he hit in the playoff hole on 18 and dude rose rose hit a seed too. If that ball lands four inches shorter than where it landed, oh yeah, we're going to the second playoff hole. They're both going oh for sure.

Graham:

Oh, for a second with rory's. I knew, obviously knew it was coming back, but it's just like that momentum that it had going up the hill and I was like hey, hey, hey, school year old, everybody, come home back, come on back. And you know, I was listening on the drive home to PTA tour radio on XM and you know they Jack Nicholson called in and they were talking to him about it and he said it's who?

Scott:

called in. Who called in? Okay, I was just wondering who called in.

Graham:

I can't. I watched the departed last in.

Scott:

I can't I watched it, departed last night All right, I think the guy you just named.

Graham:

Yeah, I meant.

Scott:

Quartzside at the Lakers or something. Yeah, okay, not the golden Jack. Nicklaus, not the golden bear. Yeah, okay, yeah, wow.

Graham:

Wow, three slaps in the day. I mean whatever Course. Wow, three slaps in the day, I mean whatever. Um course, knowledge is paramount there. You know the more times you play.

Graham:

But jack basically said he's like when he saw his putt and by he he means rose he's like you're gonna get fooled. He's like you think it's gonna come back left, but he's like that putt straight. He's like you think it's going to come back left, but he's like that putt's straight. He's like it's not breaking. And it did exactly what Jack said it was going to do. And I'm just like, wow, you know.

Graham:

It's just like with putting, especially when you're putting on greens that are, you know, like putting on glass, the smallest thing can make a difference. And just to have that knowledge of how these putts go late, I mean it's. I mean if you hit it pure, yeah, you know it. Just, it is what it is, but I mean. So let me ask you this question. And the reason why I'm asking this is because in the interview with the golden bear he said he was talking to his wife and rory had the put on 18, not in the playoff, the first 18. He told his wife that he was going to miss it, like he even said, that Jack told Barbara his wife that he yeah, he thinks he's going to miss it and he missed it.

Graham:

So, that being said, obviously the put they had in the playoff I mean that was. I mean, when you're hitting it that tight it's not going to happen. But like the storyline of I mean, look, we all saw what happened at Pinehurst last year for the US Open, it's just like and then him missing again. Obviously he got the redemption in the playoff, but and I hate to say if, because if, if, ands and buts, I get it. All those cliches, but, dude, if rose pulls that out like this is a completely different episode today.

Scott:

Oh man if rose pulled that out, jerry texted me he goes.

Graham:

If rory blows this, his wife is definitely divorcing him that's fucked up, like I mean not suicide watch, but like how do you? I mean, he'll just continue on, he'll play what he'll play great, he'll win some tournaments. He might not win another major, but the thing is, folks, we keep on forgetting. Granted, the FedEx Cup hasn't been around for that long, but it's just like, dude, the amount of FedEx Cups that he's won On top of all the other majors, it's not like it's about majors. I mean, I know that, speaking of it's all about majors. I know I sent it to you in the middle of the night, my time, and it's kind of early in your time.

Graham:

Did you see? What I sent you in text the other night about Steve Williams was on a podcast. I think it must have been back in his hometown or something. But basically, the clip that I said. The clip basically said and this is from Stevie, right, he's like look, when it's all said and done, you know, years from now, yeah, jack will have all the majors, he'll be the major champion. But everyone knows what tiger did in his era one building game, but then also with the people that he played against and to dominate how he did. He's just like it's tiger. There was not even a hesitation in his voice, like he was just that specific on it. When I saw that, when, when I saw him say that, I was just like I mean, I agree with you, but to see it from his lens, yeah, and just some of the other clips that I saw from the interview with him.

Scott:

The subpar podcast with colt nosed and drew. They had a mirror. Yeah, they had a mirror on there and we all know a mirror and tiger were boys. Yeah, and a mirror is way older and got to play it with oh yeah. And they asked a mirror and he goes. Without a doubt, tiger, he goes. We would play that I'll worse, or whatever in Orlando when Tiger first moved there yeah, and he goes. I quit playing after eight holes one time and Tiger's like where are you going? He goes, f you, I'm out of here. You're like.

Graham:

Oh, you mean when he shot 59, they go back the next day and go win birdie eagle yeah you're 19 under par through 27 holes. I'm out how demoralizing is that if you're a playing partner and the next year Tiger puts the green jacket on him.

Scott:

Yeah, and then O'Meara goes on to win the British.

Graham:

So sneaky guys, you forget how good he was yeah, something.

Scott:

Uh, we talked about a couple episodes ago when I was talking about rory will win more than one and a half majors. Right, finally found the betting line before this week over one and a half 26 to one. Ooh, there you go, which, like you said earlier, does not seem high enough.

Graham:

Dude, to win one major is hard enough, and I know you were favored in this one. Like I get that? No, I wasn't even favored in this one.

Scott:

I'm favoring the PGA at Quail Hollow, where he's won a hundred times, yeah, and then the Open Championship in his home country yeah, port Rush. I wonder what the line on him to win at Quail Hollow, the PGA Championship next month, is. Oh, and here's another fun set. That's Rory's first win in the month of April ever. What Dude, I'm just going to go out there, man, and just say last week.

Graham:

Well, okay, Texas, so it's the Valero, the Masters, RBC Heritage, and then what's the one after that? So I mean I get it Still yeah.

Scott:

Yeah, we said it on the podcast last week. We went into great detail about it. Yeah, what my guy did mentally today after the start double and then a four-shot lead and then hits a 70-yard little pitch shot in the water.

Graham:

Then a playoff and sacks up and hits it gram-dick tight. What did he have? So another little storyline that just popped in my head.

Scott:

So the PGA Championship in May, rory's 5-1, scotty's 5-1.

Graham:

Wow, it's not very often people are getting close to Scotty's odds Quill Hollow, I mean. But what I was about to bring up was I was watching some clips and they were basically saying that so obviously Rory and his wife didn't get divorced, they're back together. But what I was watching is this reporter was talking about how even their time at the masters, like during the practice round, even on the part, the par three challenge on when on Wednesday there was no like him holding hands with his wife, there was no like him showing any type of emotion, like no kissing her, like none of that. But I noticed when he came up off 18, he kissed his daughter and then he gave his wife a kiss. You know, at the end I'm just like Then, you know what happened?

Scott:

Because Billy noticed it and texted me what happened. What a piece of trash. You pull your wife under the rope, then just leave her. No wonder she wanted a divorce. Billy shut the no dude. You walk to the scoring area with your family.

Graham:

Yeah, is that not a normal thing? Does that happen? Do they do that, though I?

Scott:

don't know, you don't leave her.

Graham:

No, but I'm just trying to think of past champions. I'm pretty sure that they. I don't think they're. Don't leave her. No, but I'm just trying to think of past champions. I'm pretty sure that they are. I don't think they're allowed back. I mean, I get your point.

Scott:

One of the funniest things that Billy texted today, and I have to say I agree. Oh God, A playoff in a major should not be one hole. Okay, what do you want? Three or a full day? I don't want a full day, you know. That's why the US Open moved away from that.

Graham:

So what do you want? A three-hole aggregate. Three-hole aggregate? Yeah, give them three holes.

Scott:

So Billy says one-hole playoffs in major are stupid. As we speak, the Buffalo Bills are petitioning for a change.

Graham:

That's tough. All right, I knew there was a reason why you brought that up, dude. How good is that?

Scott:

Am I wrong?

Announcer:

And something I forgot to mention earlier.

Scott:

Vegas Golden Knights specific division champions once again. And if you give me a who, you're giving me a? Two slaps and a Ric Flair Woo and, ladies and gentlemen, that's the fourth one. Oh man, just a bit, it's okay, it's all right. I mean, you did call the golden bear Jack Nicholson, so hey they're both iconic, they're both top of their field respective fields.

Scott:

I mean, okay, whatever I'm trying to sound all I can say is this dude, amazing masters. It lived up to the hype today for golf. We got what we wanted. We didn't see the golf we wanted, but it was still exciting. You're still on the edge of your seat and agreed, and that's what Augusta does to you. And that's why I disagree 100% with Gary Player when he says the Masters Tournament is the fourth-ranked major out there. I used to think it was number two until I went there. The history, dude, the history we all know the golf course, we know it, we remember things. You can go there year after year. Go see where Bubba hit that shot in the playoff. You can see the house Rory snap hooked it into on number 10 with the four-shot lead. It doesn't disappoint.

Graham:

Dude, I remember texting you almost 20 years ago but like hey, what's your? I was like us opener masters, what's your number one? And you're, and you, as you said, you're like us open first, that's your second, and I was. And I, and I was the opposite. I was like a master. I mean like pick your poison. I mean they're both great, just, but they're both completely different, completely different.

Scott:

And so I mean and something that's so weird my dad and I were talking about the other day because I was saying we were talking about me and you at Augusta together and he's like, he's like, did y'all go out there together? I'm like, no, I was talking about your boy and this. And that, yeah, how ironic it was that we ran into each other on the last round and he was like so y'all couldn't even plan where to meet. I'm like graham didn't know when he was going to get a ticket or if he even got a ticket. Yeah, and then it happened we found each other.

Graham:

And then it was like, after it's over, meet me right here, don't leave until you see me. Yeah, I was like, if I do get a ticket at this time of the day, meet me at this scoreboard at this time and we'll meet up, type of thing.

Scott:

That didn't even happen, though. That was 10 years ago. 10 years ago today, bro, we were having pimento cheese, burps and shit.

Graham:

We were also Remember nothingness.

Scott:

Oh shit, but we were also. Yeah, remember nothingness.

Graham:

Oh like, ah man, anyhow, hopefully next year we're there doing a show at Mike Ivy's house yeah if not, we'll be right here, but hopefully we're there, hopefully our boy fowler's there, yeah r squared and we're we're partying right now oh yeah, hey, I'll take baby steps, but if that fucking happened, there ain't no podcast on sunday night. I'm telling you that right now.

Scott:

Well I would probably go out on a limb and you're gonna be pissed at what I'm about to say. There would probably. There would probably be a podcast, but you would probably be missing me.

Graham:

Then there wouldn't be a podcast. I ain't doing it solo.

Scott:

Well, you might have to if Fowler wins, cause I know who's got a ticket. I got a ticket. I would try, but you know, here we go. Here we go. One dog, one bone. Oh, I'm sorry. Are you going to be like, hey, fowler, I'm not coming to your party unless my boy Graham can? Nope, you're going to be like giving me the Heisman Trophy Award. Peace out law.

Graham:

No, honestly, you know what I would do. I wouldn't even look at you. Yeah, okay, first of all, let's just throw that decision out the bag. No, I'd look at you. And then I'd look at my other boy, romano, and say I know some things, bro, you owe me, let's go.

Scott:

That's all I would say. And on that, on that note, folks, it's time to end the night scott, what a hell of an episode today was.

Graham:

Who needs notes when you had an unbelievable day at the masters like this, hey?

Scott:

the old saying, it's a tradition unlike any other.

Graham:

It was it was everything he wanted it to be. I'm happy with the outcome, I'm happy with how everything went and I'm happy to rewatch the entire fourth round later tonight or tomorrow. So I'm excited for that. Scott, it's always a pleasure doing the podcast with you and, as the best homie always says, booba.

Scott:

Good night friends, good night Rory.

Graham:

Have fun with your lucky charms, booba. Oh, his lucky charms are getting played with tonight, that's for sure, booba.
