Shinnecock Hills has a way of making professional golfers look human, and that’s exactly why we love the US Open. We sit down on a Wednesday night, crack one open, and get right to the good stuff: the course, the wind, the setup, and the bets that make the weekend even more fun to watch. We also react to the surprise news that the USGA and R&A are delaying the golf ball rollback, and we talk through what that might actually mean for the modern power game, dispersion, and scoring.

From there, we zoom out to the state of pro golf and the “two-tier” vibe around elevated events, sponsors, and how often the biggest names really show up. Then it’s full Shinnecock preview mode, including the legendary history, the scars from past setups, and why a course can have wide fairways but still demand total control into firm, exposed greens. With 30 to 40 mph winds in the forecast and the USGA planning to syringe greens between waves, we break down the biggest variable at any US Open: getting the right tee time draw.

Finally, we build our card with a simple structure: favorites, mid-tier picks, and long shots. Graham rolls with Matt Fitzpatrick, Scott lands on Xander Schauffele (with plenty of love for Tommy Fleetwood), and we dig into names like Patrick Reed, Russell Henley, Sam Burns, Tyrrell Hatton, Wyndham Clark, Gary Woodland, and Harris English. If you’re watching Shinnecock all weekend, come sweat it with us. Subscribe, share the show with a golf buddy, and leave a quick review. Who’s your pick to win, and what score takes the trophy?

Wednesday Night US Open Kickoff

Graham

Welcome to another episode of the Bald Guys on the Bench podcast with your hosts Graham Cohen and Scott Wasco.

Scott

What's up everyone, and welcome to a Wednesday night edition of the Bald Guys on the Bench. My apologies. It's been a crazy last couple days here at the Wasco household. Ava graduated, family in town, couldn't find some time, so we were actually gonna bypass this and go right into next week. And I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, Graham. We got to keep the tradition going with the favorites and the long shots. So we're just gonna go straight into golf. We'll have another episode when you can hear my tears about the Knights losing in the Stanley Cup finals, you know, the end of the week. But uh anyhow, it's golf. That's how Graham and I met. So figured we got to keep that going, right?

Graham

I mean, you ain't wrong. So let's get it going. Let's grab one and crack one, brother.

Scott

Let's do it. So it's Wednesday night, U.S. Open starts tomorrow morning. Shinnecock, the return. One of the original five clubs that were there that founded the USGA. I mean, fun fact for you. One of five.

Graham

That's pretty gangster.

Golf Ball Rollback Gets Delayed

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

But before we even get into the US Open today at a press conference, dude, at Shinnecock, it was kind of amazing. Uh USGA and RA announced they're delaying the rollback of the golf ball. What? Yeah, pretty amazing. Uh wow. As I was watching and listening to this, I started thinking about my man crush, Cam Young, who's been playing a ball that would be legal when this happens. Yeah. And remember the 70-second hole uh sawgrass? Remember how far he hit that? Was it around 360 or something like that? Yeah. Okay. Pretty wild.

Graham

So what, you're saying that the rollback would hurt players that don't hit it far enough as it is already?

Scott

I'm just saying these guys hit it a mile anyhow.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

I think ultimately it's gonna help them hit it a little straighter. Think about it. You got ball speeds up in the 180s. You hit it a little crooked. This golf ball is a little rolled back now. Well, it's not gonna go 60 yards, right? It's now gonna go 50.

Graham

Yeah. I mean, I guess there's there's always another way to look at it. You know what I mean? Yeah.

Scott

But I don't know. That like came out of nowhere. I was just like, wow, okay.

Rory And The Two Tier Tour

Graham

Man. Did you see Rory's comments the other day about when they were asking him about uh, you know, uh he was basically making comments how you know, like last week could turn into a situation where it's like, you know, a uh basically the tour can is turning into like either you're playing in an elevated event or it's like a the second tier, their second tier event type of thing just because of sponsorship and the money's not there.

Scott

Of course. I mean, how many events has Rory played in this year? I think nine.

Graham

Yeah. But is some of that due to age and also he's at this point in his career where it's just like, I just want to play what I want to play. But then in that case, shouldn't the tour be like, hey, you're our number one guy, our number two guy. We want you to play X amount of events. We need you to carry the tour.

Scott

I don't disagree. I mean, I I don't know what the bare minimum is. Back in the day, it used to be, I think, 16 events to maintain your card just by playing. I I don't know what it is now. I mean, I know when the signature things first came out, I remember players not playing and wasn't it like a fine or some sort? I remember I don't remember who won the masters, but didn't play at Harbor Town the next week and got a fine.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

I don't remember who it was. Yeah, I I think that might have been after Lib, obviously, because the signature events came after that. But anyhow, that's another

Shinnecock History And Past Carnage

Scott

discussion. Yeah, Shinnecock, dude. Okay, little history for people that don't know a lot about Shinnnecock, okay. Corey Paven won there when we were little pups. Uh 2004, Ratif Goosen won there. And in 2004, there was carnage everywhere because the course is so hard, and the green complexes are ridiculous. Ratif Goosen finished four under par, Phil finished two under par. They're the last two people to finish under par at Shinnecock in the U.S. opened, and that was in 2004. What there was there was an instance on the seventh hole par three. I think the first couple groups that came through on Saturday because of my boy Earl the Pearl, shout out to my old superintendent from Cali, uh, was told to go mow the seventh green a lot on Friday afternoon. Well, the first three or four groups that came through number seven, I think the lowest score was a five on a par three.

Graham

Damn.

Scott

So after that happened, the USGA literally said, okay, if it if somebody in a group makes a double, we got to go throw water on the screen. And they're doing it during play. So, you know, fast forward to 18. And the same kind of shit happened. And this is right when the USGA is getting pounded for a course setup and this and that. Yeah. Well, when you got a course like this, dude, and the wind plays such a big factor in everything, it's hard to set it up fairly, right? Right. I mean, the 11th hole we were talking about last night, it's 157 yard par three. It's known as what? The shortest par five in the world. Right. 157 yards. 157 yards. I don't remember which one of the last two I was talking about, but at one point I remember you could hear it on air. And it's weird how you remember these types of things. But Bones says to Phil, they're only the 11th hole. He goes, Our only play is to hit it in the greenside bunker. Don't try to hit it at the pin. Hit it in the greenside bunker left.

Graham

That's insane.

Scott

And does and makes four where everybody else is making five. 157-yard hole. Is that any good?

Graham

I I just you know.

Scott

It's hard to fathom when these guys are hitting gap wedges now, 140. They're hits a pitching wedge 150 by wind, right? Remember last night we were watching stuff and I think Rory hit six iron on the hole? On something on Instagram I sent you. It was like, wow. Yeah.

Graham

But look, I I mean, I've always been a big proponent of, especially when it comes to the US Open, make it difficult. This is the one tournament where we want to see the best players in the I mean, let me rephrase this. I said that I want to see him struggle, but it's just like I'm happy with even parr, you know, two under winning it type of a situation. But I also don't want it to be a situation like you were saying, where it's already difficult, but if they made it even harder, and then if the win conditions come in, I'm not looking at plus six and more to win this golf tournament. Like that, I don't want to see that because then it just gets frustrating.

Scott

You want to see tough but fair.

Graham

Exactly.

Scott

That's what we all want to see. In in 18, when Brooks won, he won I think one uh yeah, one over. Looking at it right now. Yeah. One over. Fleetwood went out in the early morning and shot seven under and finished second at plus two. It's crazy. It's and here's the thing, dude, Shannon. It's not like US Open's where the fairway is like five yards wide. The average fairway width going this week? Okay?

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

You ready? 48 yards.

Graham

What?

Scott

Yeah. So what's I tell you? The greens are rough. It's a second shot golf horse, dude.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

So with that being said, I mean, listen to this. The last time they were there in 18, Kepka wins, Fleetwood second, DJ third, Patrick Reed, Finault, Burger, Hatton, Shawflee. Our boy Fowler finished T20. Uh so with that being said, I think the USGA is going into this event, going, We don't want mud on our face like we've had

Winds, Stimp, And Green Syringing

Scott

the last two times of golf tournaments been here. Right?

Graham

Okay. What's not mud on their face? Like what number? Like six under?

Scott

Oh no. I'm saying mud on their face as far as course setup.

Graham

Oh, okay.

Scott

Yeah. I mean, the head pro I listened to a podcast with him the other day, he goes, three under will be the lowest it'll go. Unless it rains, which the forecast, it ain't raining. But speaking of forecast, uh tomorrow afternoon is supposed to be 30 to 40 mile an hour winds starting around noon. So instantly, we've talked about it on the show numerous times. It's what? It's about the luck of your wave. So the early Thursday, late Friday, you're welcome. You got the luck of the draw. Right. So, but uh, you know, I was telling you earlier, because of all these things, and the USGA, you know, we'll call it say tread and water. USGA sent out a memo to all the players this afternoon. And kind of crazy. Given the probability of high winds on Thursday and Friday, USGA is planning to syringe putting greens between the morning and afternoon waves both days. Syringing involves a very light application of water to hydrate the grass leaf. Played to prevent wilt, preserve turf health, yada yada yad. The practice offers a more consistent presentation for players in both. They're saying the stemp is going to be around 10.

Graham

Interesting.

Scott

10 on the stemp. Now, folks, the Masters is around 13 and a half, 14.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

Oakmont on a daily basis for their members is around the same. 13, 14. The head pro at Oakmont literally told me they slow the greens down for the US Open.

Graham

Which is insane.

Scott

And this now we're going into Shinnercock at 10? The only way this backfires if is if what? There's no wind.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

And then people are gonna be bitching. Like it's LA Country Club four or five years ago, and Rick goes out and what is you, 63? You know, that's the only way it's gonna it's gonna backfire.

Graham

Well yeah, they could also stop watering, though, after day one.

Scott

After day one, for sure. But I don't know. Historic track, dude. It's it's so cool. I mean, you're probably too young to remember Corey Paven. I don't even remember when that was. I was I think I was in high school uh when he won there, hitting that those ugly ass Cleveland VAS irons. Do you remember those nasty looking? Oh my god. Do you not remember those?

Graham

No, I remember those. Yeah, of course I remember Corey Paven. Him actually winning it. Not so much.

Scott

I mean Did he hit that shot on the 18th? 1995. I was a junior in high school.

Graham

Yeah, no, I definitely didn't miss that.

Scott

Wow. Yeah. Wow. Beat Greg Norman by two, finished even bar. Wow. That's insane. God, those irons are disgusting. Oh they were so bad. Yeah, it was the four

Betting Categories And Favorite Picks

Scott

wood on 18. But so, you know, we always do this every for every major. We gotta pick a favorite, we gotta pick a long shot. Well, tonight we threw in a wrinkle, and what'd I call it earlier? A middle of the road guy. Middle of the road. Something like that, yeah. So the way we're picking is you know, the favorites have to be less than what I say, 30 to 1?

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

No, 35, 35. Middle of the road is from 39 to 1 to what we say, 50 to 1 is our long shots.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

So this is a tournament I've been talking to Graham. I like a lot of people. I don't know. A lot of people have been playing well. I'll tell you once again, who I don't like. And I said this going into the Masters and he won. So anybody listening out there, go ahead and throw a couple bucks on Rory because I don't like him this week. I don't know. I just don't like him. I don't know.

Graham

I mean, if we're going down that road, it almost happened. Remember who I called out saying they're not making the cut for the Masters? I might say it again for the US Open.

Scott

Who was that? Bryson. I really don't like him this week.

Graham

That's what I'm saying.

Scott

In these conditions and how he not win with the side hill eyes and a one-length iron and brand new driver in the bag. He just switched to a Taylor-made driver.

Graham

I mean, I wish I could make that bet. I haven't found it yet, but if I do, you best believe.

Scott

Hey, I don't, I don't, you ain't gonna see an argument from me on that one. Right? Well, anyhow, who's your favorite?

Graham

I'm gonna go with someone who's been playing pretty consistent these last I'd say more than a couple weeks. I mean these last two months. I'm gonna go with Matt Fitzpatrick.

Scott

Hey, and by then playing pretty well, uh he already has one U.S. Open.

Graham

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I've been looking he hits the ball straight, his irons are good, he has good putting, his short game's good. I mean, keeping the ball in play and greens and regulation, that's kind of important. So that's who I'm going with.

Scott

Well, a 48-yard average wide fairway. If you can't hit that, I mean a goddamn jet could land on that goddamn thing. I mean, not saying not, I mean, obviously the conditions with the wind and stuff, but still.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

Hit a fair way. You gotta hit fairways. And this is why the favorite is so hard for me to pick. I mean, up and telling you, I like so many people this week. Right. Obviously, I'm kind of pulling for Scotty to get the Grand Slam on his birthday, but I'm not picking him. I've worn out Cam Young and my man crush. I want him to win. But it came down to but two people, dude. And it's Xander and Fleetwood. That's my favorite. And I don't know. It's like, do you have a coin? Can you flip a coin? Because I don't know, dude. It's like one A and one B. I don't know. I'm just gonna go out on a limb and just say I'm going Xander.

Graham

Okay. I like it.

Scott

I I can argue both of them, dude. Fleetwood's fair wayfinder. I I mean, you can't, I don't know. You can't argue it.

Graham

I like them both. To be honest, Fleetwood was the choice of mine as well between him and Fitzpatrick. I mean, I like Shoffley too. They're all three great choices.

Scott

Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. So what do we call it? The middle of the pack? Is that what we said? 35 to 100 higher?

Graham

Yes.

Scott

I I don't I gotta flip a coin on this one too. Maybe three times. I mean, it's like, can we get best three out of five? I mean, yeah, just think you can make an argument for any of

Middle Odds Targets We Like

Scott

these dudes playing well. I mean all right, what do you got? Who's your middle of the road? I already remember who you're taking.

Graham

Well, I'm going with uh good old boy Patrick Reed. So I mean he's been he's played well there, he's been playing consistent. He's playing, I mean, dude, he just shows up in majors. I I mean, look, I wasn't his biggest fan for the longest time. I I I can't say I've completely turned around on him, but sometimes game gotta recognize game, and that's really what it comes down to. Just because you don't like your family doesn't mean you can't root for a guy because he plays good.

Scott

And like my old boss Flint, proofs in the pudding. Yeah, the guy plays good golf course as well. Why? Because his short game is like in fuego. I mean, insane, his short game. I don't know. He's in one of my pools.

Graham

Right? Wouldn't be surprised. Was he in one of your three or five choices for middle of the road?

Scott

Uh no.

Graham

Okay, good, good.

Scott

Because this middle of the pack thing sucks.

Graham

All right, just give us three of them then. Give us give us some.

Scott

The one for the podcast that I'm gonna, you know, go out on a limb for. Okay. Russell Henley.

Graham

Okay. Love it.

Scott

The other ones I love, dude. Sam Burns. Could have won last year.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

City ruling on 14th hole, whatever it was. I mean, not taking anything away from JJ. Sam Burns. Another one, somebody that once again, like Patty Reed, only plays hard golf courses well. Hatton.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

And another person I had a kick rocks moment on the show almost a year to the day, Wyndham Clark, when he destroyed the locker room at Oakmont.

Graham

Yeah, dude, he's been on fire these last months.

Scott

Yeah, he got that new putter, and dude just signed uh he left titleist. He was a free agent and literally just signed this afternoon with Ping. So he will go into Ping.

Graham

Wow.

Scott

Yeah. I I mean, dude, I can sit here and make I don't know. JJ Spawn. It's gonna be tough. Only two people have ever won back-to-back US opens. Can you name them? I mean how well. I I would assume. I wasn't even playing in a quiz tonight, but that was a that was a good one.

Graham

I would think Jack.

Scott

Uh-uh.

Graham

No. Wow. Tiger?

Scott

One's in our one's in the field.

Graham

One's in the field. Oh, Brooks. Brooks went in. Brooks? Brooks.

Scott

Yeah.

Graham

I said Tiger. I didn't say anything, so I'm assuming no. I have no idea.

Scott

757 boy. And 757 is my area code here in Virginia.

Graham

Oh, okay.

Scott

Curtis.

Graham

Ah. Yeah. Oh, that's right. Okay.

Scott

Yep.

Graham

What was that? Like 91, 92?

Scott

I think it was 88 and

Long Shots, Trivia, And Course Fit

Scott

89, maybe.

Graham

89? Okay.

Scott

Maybe. Don't quote me on it. Alright. Long shot. Once again, I got so many of these.

Graham

There's so many names. So instead of hemming and hawing like Scott has, you know, shaking his head back and forth, not knowing who to pick, I'm just looking at all these names, and you know what? I could flip 50 different coins. I'm just looking at a name. I saw it, and I'm picking someone I just want to root for. That's how I'm going for it. Okay. And I'm going with Gary Woodland. You know what? He's been playing pretty good as of late. And he's just a story that I want to root for.

Scott

Hey, I saw a meme today. He was playing in a practice round with Scotty and somebody else. I wish I knew who it was. But he blew one past them both off the T. Yeah. And they literally showed the video of him pulling out his range finder and shooting where Scotty was and was like, yeah, that's 49. I mean, is that any good? I'm so glad you didn't pick the person you would mention when we were talking on the phone before, because I was gonna have to. Yeah. Kick you squaw, as Badger would say, in the nuts. Yeah.

Graham

I haven't heard him say that in a long time.

Scott

Right. Um, my long shot, dude. Once again, I got multiple people, but I'm gonna stick with one. Even though I like a couple. And if you saw my DraftKings open bets, you could tell who all these people I like. Uh Harris English. Yeah? Good old Harry, dude. Why? Drives it straight. I I just dude drive. This great amazing iron player. What else do you want? And I think, gosh, I think he played well there last time. Um, I don't know. But the golf course, dude, dude, the second hole, 252-yard par three. Thanks for playing. My dad, when we were talking about it, he said there was something on Instagram and there was like a poll. What would you hit on this hole? And my dad commented and said driver. And I didn't have the heart to be like, and a wedge?

Graham

Oh my god.

Scott

When he hears this, he's gonna kill me.

Graham

But I'm gonna be like driver and a wedge.

Scott

Driver? What? I'm sorry, what? Driver.

Graham

I mean, oh T-bone, get him.

Scott

He's gonna kill me, but whatever. It's kind of funny. Uh I thought Harris English played well there last time. I don't know. Whatever. Russell Henley a little T25 last time.

Graham

All right.

Scott

Dude, I don't know. What else we got for the U.S. Open? I mean, it's like I've always said, it used to be my favorite major championship of all times until I went to Augusta. I've been to a couple US Open before I ever went to Augusta. Yeah, been to the U.S. Open twice at Pinehurst, been to Tory, obviously, way back when in the infamous Tiger win. But I don't know. It's it's definitely my second favorite. Obviously.

Graham

For sure.

Scott

Obviously.

Graham

Um, although it would be kind of nice. I mean, imagine doing like a little boys' trip and hitting up the British if it's at St. Andrews. I

Senior Open Shout Outs And Block

Graham

mean, that would be a fun time.

Scott

That would be absolutely 100%. Absolutely. Um, oh, how did I forget?

Graham

Tell me.

Scott

As we're talking about U.S. opens, let's talk about the U.S. Senior Open.

Graham

Oh, yes. We got some shout-outs.

Scott

Our boy that was on the show last year, Eric Mike Tree. Uh, way to go, fella. Back-to-back U.S. Senior Opens.

Graham

Let's go.

Scott

Let's go, brother. And in the same field, Block Block was in a playoff for the final spot at his qualifying site. And then, you know, Block just turned literally the qualifier was on Block's 50th birthday. Oh, wow. And and then gets in. And guess what? Uh Block just got a sponsor exemption into the Dicks Open senior event next week. Be ready to see a lot of Michael Block on the senior tour. It's happening. Yeah.

Graham

I just kind of like how you slow rolled the name of the event.

Scott

The Dicks.

Graham

The Dicks Open. Um, excuse me.

Scott

The Dicks, whatever. Whatever it's called. Dicks. Shut up. Wow.

Graham

Somebody love it.

Scott

Somebody said player on site today just commented if the wind is blowing during the tournament like it is today, the 11th green is absolutely unplayable. Love it.

Graham

I mean, hey, challenge accepted.

Scott

Right? Yeah, have fun. Uh, it's the Dick's Open in New York. I had to look at it. Have fun. Have fun with that one, everybody. Um, what are we gonna do? Are we gonna do one Sunday night?

Graham

Yeah, just regular scheduled program.

Scott

Father's Day, US Open Sunday. Um, I mean, we don't have to dodge NBA

Graduation Emotions And Closing Bets

Scott

or hockey. Yeah.

Graham

Wah wah wah.

Scott

Yeah. But uh I don't know. Shout out to my daughter. It was a crazy stat, dude. Like, finished with over a 4.0. Insane. And like, I think the principal said 77% of the 390 people that graduated from her school had over a 3.0.

Graham

Wow. Right? Isn't that wild? Man, they're really lowering the standards in the high school. I'm just kidding.

Scott

But crazy to think, you know, off to ECU in the fall. And huge shout out to all my boys that texted and called her, and it was awesome. But uh, I'll just say this, dude. Your boy was a wreck. I didn't even know how emotional it was gonna be for me. You know, you know, I'm a big baby anyway. I cry.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

Fowler wins a golf tournament, I cry. Shit like that. Nights win the Stanley Cup, I cry. Yeah. My wedding, I cried. Kristen didn't appreciate it. Uh but Monday morning, my mom's in town, and Monday morning, I think I told you this, maybe I didn't. And we're just sitting here having breakfast, and she's like, Are you okay? And I'm like, What? She goes, Are you doing okay? And I'm like, Yeah, the night's lost last night. It's okay. It's a team. And she's like, No, are you okay with this whole Ava thing? And I'm like, never even thought about it.

Graham

I'm like, like I was until now.

Scott

I'm like, appreciate it. So, you know, graduation's over. I'm like getting the most four in a suite. Let's go. How good is that? Right. Uh I'm like, you know, crying. Andrew, her boyfriend's like, oh my god, you're crying, you're gonna make me cry. Ball, Andrew's balling. Kristen ain't crying. Then we get to Kristen's mom's house for a party, and like right before every everybody's there, and Kristen's mom's like, You need to say something. And I'm like, What? Like, yeah, you need to thank everybody for coming, and this and that. And I'm like, Yeah. If I would have known this, I would have had something a little prepared. Dude, I made it like 30 seconds. I'm crying again. I'm like, Jesus, I mean, come on now. But yeah. I'm like, come on. But you know, like told my buddy at work, I'm like, dude, you didn't tell me how crazy this was gonna be on graduation. He goes, wait till you drop her off at school and leave without her. I'm like, that's when Kristen will lose her shit.

Graham

Yeah.

Scott

You know what I mean? That's when she'll lose it. But anyhow, couldn't be more proud. You've known me before her, you've known her since she was, you know, born, and it's crazy. But yeah, couldn't be more proud. So quick episode, 30 minutes. Graham's gonna get it out so you guys can listen to it. US Open first T time, 6 30. So who knows? Morning wave, let's go. What's our guy's name? First round leader? What's his name? Suber? Jackson. Jackson, whatever.

Graham

What's his name? S-U-B-A-R? B-E-R.

Scott

I'm looking at what I sent you. Jackson Suber. Let's go. Second T time of the day. First round leader. Let's go.

Graham

Hey, I ain't mad at 22 to 1. Let's go, baby.

Scott

22? Shit. I got him at 94.

Graham

I thought that was to win it.

Scott

No, I got him at 250 to 1 to win. Oh, I must uh I must have misread the numbers. Anyway. Anyhow, uh I hope everyone enjoys the US Open. I hope it's an exciting event like last year. Hope somebody drops a bomb on the last hole, even though calling it right now. Ready? Let's hear it. And it's in a playoff.

Graham

Why? Make that bet. I like that. I like that. Okay. Throw a couple of ducats on that. Well, Scotty, I'm glad we were able to get this podcast out. I'm super excited for the U.S. Open. It's gonna be so fun to watch. I can't wait. And hey, I'm ready for this weekend. And happy soon to be Father's Day for you. And until Sunday, as the best homie always says, booba.

Scott

Good night, friends. Good night, everyone playing in the US Open. Please, USGA, don't screw this up. Fowler, let's go. I didn't mention your name. Didn't say anything. Don't want to jinx it. Let's go. Romano, get my boy home. Bubba!
